Mouse Facts & Information

Types of Mice

There are 7 types of mice that call Wyoming their home; the Western Harvest Mouse, Northern Grasshopper Mouse, Plains Harvest Mouse, White-Footed Mouse, Pinyon Mouse, Canyon Mouse, and the Deer Mouse - most common mouse that infest homes.

Deer Mouse

  • Size: They are round and slender, ranging from 7 to 10 cm long in body length.
  • Head: Deer mice have a pointed nose and large, black beady eyes. Their ears are large with little fur covering them.
  • Color: Their bodies are bicolored with a light brownish-reddish top and white underbelly and feet.
  • Tail: These pests have short tails, distinctly bicolored (dark on top and light on bottom), and covered with short, fine hairs and can be 5 to 13 cm in length.

How Serious Are Deer Mice?

Depending on the severity of infestation level from deer mice, it can become a health concern. Deer mice are a problematic problem when they seek shelter inside of your home, storing a surplus of grains, nuts, and fruits. They build their habit to better suit themselves, create messy nesting sites, food storage, and their bathroom use is abundant in your home.
Do Deer Mice Carry Diseases?
As innocent as a deer mouse may look, they are known to carry dangerous diseases; they can be spread through contamination of food or parasites the mouse may be carrying. Deer mice should not be confused with one of the important reservoirs of Lyme disease, the white-footed deer mouse.
Hantavirus
Deer mice are on of the main rodents to carry hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, an illness that is spread through their waste. People can inhale this airborne virus by using incorrect methods and tools when cleaning up their droppings.
